Bhutan, the tiny Himalaya Kingdom, is nestled between its husky neighbor China and India. It is tranquil country which lets you unwind in pristine nature and explore ancient cultures and beautiful landscapes.

Bhutan, also called Druk Yul in local dialects, is the “Land of the Thunder Dragon”. The unique geographical location and self-isolation policy makes it one of most beautiful and mysterious place in the planet.

Bhutan is landlocked country with a population of 720,679 according to the census of 2012. The life expectancy of people is 67 years in Bhutan. The kingdom is believed to be the last remaining Buddhist monarchy and stretches from subtropical plain to the border of India to sub-alpine Himalaya to north on the border of the Tibet autonomous region. The absolute monarchy of Bhutan is amended to constitutional monarchy in the year 2008.

History

The country had no national currency, no telephones, no schools, no hospital, no postal service and no public services until 1960s. The self-imposed isolation policy was changed in 1961 when the third monarch, King His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuk moved to the path of modernization while taking care of its ancient culture and tradition. Since then, Bhutan have been huge success in the field of Tourism and have never looked back.

It is probably the only country where Gross National Happiness is taken in major account than Gross National Product. Gross National Happiness stands on four major pillars

  • Conservation of the Environment
  • Equitable and Sustainable Development
  • Good Governance
  • Preservation of Culture
