Tibet Khatra Valley Trek is one of challenging yet rewarding trek that takes you to mysterious and secluded part of Tibet through steep valleys, high passes and gorgeous glacial lakes. This exotic trek is combined with guided sightseeing tour in Lhasa which allows proper acclimatization and ensures cultural experience.
We visit Potala Palace (the holy residence of Dalai Lamas), Barkhor Street (ancient market), Norbulinga Palace (the summer residence of Dalai Lama), Sera Monastery (the second largest monastery in Tibet), Drepung Monastery (the largest monastery in Tibet) and Jokhang Temple (one of ancient temple in Tibet).
Kharta is an isolated part of Tibet locating to the east of Mount Everest. The 40 km long Khatra valley starts from the col of Lhakpa La and head of the Khatra Glacier from where the Khatra River flows to join the Phang Chu located beyond the Khatra village. In 1921, British Mount Everest reconnaissance expedition team discovered Khatra valley when researching the suitable routes to climb Everest. They managed to reach the North Col via the Lhakpa La. Although the Khatra Valley route is not used for climbing Everest, trekking to Khatra valley become popular since then.
Tibet Khatra Valley starts after a scenic Trans-Himalayan flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa. The fight offers the aerial view of gigantic mountain range including Everest (highest peak in the world), Kanchenjunga (third highest peak in the world) and other 8,000+ peaks. After three days acclimatization and exploration halt at Lhasa, the true adventure starts with overland drive towards the south east of Tibet.
We drive across the Khamba-La and Karo-La Pass of above 5,000m admiring the excellent view of turquoise Lake Yamdrok Tsho to reach Shigatse, the 2nd biggest city in Lhasa. Here we explore impressive Tashilumpo Monastery and continue our journey towards rural farm areas on huge Tibetan plateau and its dramatic landscapes. At Khatra, we use Yaks, horse or mules to carry camping gears and baggage and our crew members will facilities and serve you with delicious meals on camping.
Khatra Valley Trekking trail passes serval alpine meadows and icy lakes to reach Langma La (5,320m) with great views of Mt. Makalu and Everest North East Face. After strenuous walk and high altitude trek, we return back to Khatra village and drive towards Old Tingri Plains with spectacular view of Mt. Everest and Cho-Oyu. Finally, we join Lhasa-Kathmandu friendship highway and drive back to Kathmandu through Nyamal and Zhangmu.
Rated as “Strenuous Trek”, Khatra valley trek is suitable for passionate walkers who have ability to walk at least 5-6 hours a day with a light rucksack. Walking at higher altitude is more physically demanding that walking in lower altitude; however a sound health with strong determination and positive attitude can help you accomplish the trek successfully. Past hiking experience is an asset but not mandatory.
