Swayambhunath
Legends has it that the original stupa was built some 2000 years ago but the stupa was re-built after 14th century in present form. Swayambhunath, The shrine existing by itself”, is well-known as the “The Monkey Temple” as there are lots of monkeys scampering around the place.
Perched majestically at the top of hill, it is beautiful pagoda style temple dedicated to the Mother of Goddess Harati. All around the complex, there are numbers of shrines and statues dedicated to Hindu and Buddhist deities which shows great religious harmony between them. It is listed in UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of major sightseeing spot in Kathmandu.
Kathmandu Durbar Square
Kathmandu Durbar Square, home of an ancient Nepalese King, lies in the heart of the city. Also known as Hanuman Dhoka, its name is dedicated to Hindu God, Hanuman. It is listed in UNESCO world heritage site list and houses many quaint relics that dates back to 9/10 century.
The complex protects lavish royal palace and there are numbers of Hindu temples around its premises. This palace served as royal seat until 19th century. At present, this historical site is opened as museum for visitors. Kathmandu Durbar Square tour is suitable for those who wish to observe the history of ancient Nepal.
Pashupatinath
Pashupatinath, “The lord of all creatures and the god of gods” is another major UNESCO designated world heritage to visit during day sightseeing tour in Kathmandu. It is located to the eastern side of Kathmandu on the bank of holy River Bagmati. Legends say that the temple dates back to 5th/6th century but the present temple complex was built in 16th century. It is one of important pilgrimage site for Hindu and all Hindu followers must visit the shrine at least once in their lifetime.
In Maha Shivaratri festival, the temple is full of devotee praying stone Linga is the form of Shiva. Non-Hindus are strictly prohibited to enter the gate of temple. But the vantage point located at the bank of Bagmati River offers the clear view of temple and on-going religious activities inside the temple. The platforms along the Bagmati River is also famous for ritual bath and cremating the dead bodies of Hindu.
Boudhanath
Boudhanath, the largest stupa in Nepal, is center of Tibetan culture in Nepal. This 36 m high stupa was renovated by the Licchavi rulers in the eight century. This stupa is strategically located at an ancient trade route to Tibet where Tibetan merchants used to rest and offer prayers for many centuries. The stupa complex houses several gompa monasteries, small stupas and restaurant. It is also listed in UNESCO world heritage site.
