Trip Overview

Hiking along the ancient high-level route between Paro and Thimpu with a visit to all Bhutan’s major cultural sites, Druk path Trekking is ideal option for anyone seeking for a short and introductory trekking experience in the Land of Thunder Dragon. This scenic trek offers high altitude walk with an access to turquoise-tinted lakes, yak herders and astounding Bhutan’s Himalayan peaks. The trail maximally follows thick alpine forest hinted with rhododendron and blue pine forest, high-altitude yak pastures, isolated hamlets and stunning lakes stocked with snowy mountain peaks.

Druk Path Trek begins with the sightseeing of Rinpung Dzong (fortress) and Kichu Lhakhang in Paro valley followed by an easy hike to Taktsang Monastery. From Paro, we traverse through Jili Dzong, Jangchu Lakha, Jimilang Lake and Sikotra Lake to Thimpu. We further procced for overland trip to Thimpu and Punakha, the significant town in Bhutan with great cultural values.

The hiking route of Durk Path is sparsely populated but there are spectacular high altitude lake and the area is renowned for stunning rhododendron forest which in spring decorates the whole trail route. The Himalayan views in autumn, winter and spring are awe-inspiring. Some part of route follows the ancient mule track that connects Bhutan to the Indian boarder.

Rated as “moderately difficult trail”, Druk Path trek is ideal for any nature and culture lover with average fitness level. Spring and autumn are the best time of the year for this trek.

Outline Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival at Paro Airport and transfer to the hotel

Day 02: Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery (3,180m/5km/800-900m ascend)

Day 03: Paro – Jili Dzong (3350m/10km/4 hours)

Day 04: Jili Dzong – Jangchu Lakha (3,760m/10km/4-5 hours trek)

Day 05: Jangchu Lakha – Jimilang Lake (3885m/14km/6-7 hours)

Day 06: Jimilang Lake – Simkotra Lake (4,050m/11km/4-5 hours)

Day 07: Simkotra – Thimpu (2,334m/14km/6-7 hours trek) via Labana La pass (4,235m)

Day 08: Thimpu: Sightseeing and Exploration Day

Day 09: Drive: Thimpu – Punakha (1,200m/72km/2 hours) via Dochu La Pass (3,100m)

Day 10: Drive: Punakha – Thimpu – Paro (2,195m/127km/3.30 hours)

Upon your arrival at Paro Airport, Alpine Kailash airport representative will meet you outside the airport terminal hall and transfer you to the hotel. After hotel check in and refreshment, you will spend the afternoon exploring beautiful Paro Dzong as well as the Druk Choeding temple. Afterwards, you spend some time strolling around the quaint street of Paro.
